Norra Djurgårdsstaden in Stockholm is one of Sweden’s most extensive urban development areas. Development for housing, parkland, retail, and offices is largely taking place on land that was previously used for extensive industrial activities. Among other things, there are several underground facilities that were used for the storage of petroleum products. As these activities have ceased and the underground facilities are being decommissioned or repurposed, these facilities need to be decontaminated and environmentally secured.
Kemakta’s role as an expert consultant involves supporting the City of Stockholm’s Exploitation Office with technical investigations and participating in discussions with former operators, authorities, and other stakeholders regarding the need for investigations, remediation, management, and environmental monitoring during and after the decommissioning of the underground facilities.
