Risk Assessment of PFOS at a Former Fire Training Site

Investigations into contamination at the former training site of the Swedish Rescue Services Agency in Rosersberg, Sigtuna Municipality, were conducted in several phases from 2011 to 2016. The area had been used by the Rescue Services Agency since the 1960s for training in fire, chemical handling, lifesaving, and decontamination. Kemakta carried out environmental investigations, risk assessments, and remediation feasibility studies of PFAS compounds and oil hydrocarbons present in parts of the site.

The investigations included sampling and analysis of soil, groundwater, wetlands, water, and sludge in the drainage systems. Additionally, sampling and analysis of surface water (using both direct and passive samplers), sediment, suspended material, and benthic fauna were conducted. The risk assessments involved a detailed study of the transport pathways for PFAS compounds, including mapping the site’s drainage network. The remediation study covered oil hydrocarbons in a wetland and PFAS compounds at one of the training sites, along with preparatory investigations for remediation of stormwater and firefighting water systems. The work also included the preparation of a remediation action notification under Chapter 10 of the Environmental Code and Section 28 of the Ordinance on Environmentally Hazardous Activities and Health Protection (1998:899). A monitoring program was implemented for natural attenuation of oil pollution in a wetland and for the spread of PFAS compounds in the drainage system.
