Environmental Risk Assessment for the Decommissioning of Oil Storage Caverns

The Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) manages facilities and other properties that were previously used for the state’s civil emergency oil storage. On behalf of SGU, Kemakta conducted an environmental investigation of former diesel oil storage caverns in Vetlanda.

The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the hydrogeological conditions for contamination spread under various future scenarios, based on previous studies and supplementary investigations. A risk assessment was carried out to determine the need for remedial actions to prevent environmental impact from the facility. The risks were evaluated in part by considering the ability to comply with environmental quality standards (MKN) in the receiving waters. Based on Kemakta’s work, an application for a water management permit for the decommissioning of the cavern was submitted. The application was approved in the spring of 2018.
