Remediation of a Former Surface Treatment Industry

Since 2012, Kemakta has served as an environmental consultant for Ljungby Municipality during the planning, procurement, and execution of the remediation of a former surface treatment industry site in Dörarp. The main study, along with the risk assessment and remediation plan that formed the basis for decisions on the required remediation actions, was developed by Kemakta. The industrial activities had led to contamination of the soil and lake sediments, primarily with chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, and cyanide. The soil area was remediated between 2013 and 2014, and the remediation of the nearby Lake Färsjön and its connecting stream was completed in the spring of 2018 through the excavation of contaminated sediments.

Kemakta’s work encompassed various tasks, including participation in the preparation of the permit application and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), drafting specifications for the procurement of design and construction services, and planning the environmental monitoring program for both the soil and lake remediation. Kemakta also wrote the final report. During the construction phase, Kemakta played an active role, continuously reviewing the contractor’s environmental controls and participating in decisions on corrective actions when conditions were not met.

The remediation measures were carried out with state funding under the framework of the national environmental goal of a toxic-free environment.
