Investigation of chlorinated aliphatics and other contaminants before Residential Development

When the Bromsten industrial area in Spånga, Stockholm, was to be transformed into a new residential area, Kemakta was commissioned to plan and carry out the sampling of soil, groundwater, sediment, and soil air within the area. High concentrations of metals, petroleum products, and chlorinated aliphatics were found within the investigation area.

The risk assessment that was carried out included the development of a conceptual model for contamination distribution and transport. Transport modelling using Comsol Multiphysics was carried out to study the transport of chlorinated alifatics through a thick layer of clay that would be disturbed by piling during construction. Conditions for transport into buildings and the resulting exposure to chlorinated aliphatics were studied. Kemakta also calculatedf site-specific guideline values for soil, planned remediation measures, established quantitative remediation goals, and carried out the pre-classification of soil masses based on site-specific guideline values.
