Environmental Monitoring in Vinterviken

In Vinterviken, Stockholm, various industrial activities have historically contaminated both land and water. The area has been home to Alfred Nobel’s explosives manufacturing, sulfuric and nitric acid production, and industrial operations such as a zinc factory. In the 1950s and 60s, experiments in uranium extraction from lead-bearing shale were conducted, and in the 80s and 90s, the area was used for scrap metal processing. During 2019 and 2020, the soil and sediments were remediated through excavation and removal of contaminated materials. The remediation project, which includes both parkland and residential properties, is funded by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and is being carried out by the City of Stockholm’s Exploitation Office.

Kemakta’s role in the project has been to oversee environmental monitoring, ensuring that the remediation meets the established goals. The assignment involved weekly groundwater level measurements, turbidity monitoring in the bay, classification of dredged materials, continuous sampling of excavation bottoms and walls, and classification of soil materials. Once remediation is complete, the land will be safe for continued recreational use and residential living without risks to health and the environment.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency notes that the remediation of Vinterviken is an exemplary project, fully aligned with the national plan for addressing contamination damage. For more information, please visit their website.
