Kemakta, commissioned by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB), has calculated clearance levels for specific purposes for the materials concrete, compactable organic material, and soil. These materials are expected to be generated in significant amounts during the development and decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
Kemakta investigated different methods for managing these materials and developed limiting scenarios to describe the activities that would lead to the highest exposures. Based on this analysis, we developed a customised version of Kemakta’s DOS2U tool to calculate short- and long-term dose consequences for the new scenarios involving the 45 most relevant radionuclides. The highest dose for each individual radionuclide was used to calculate clearance levels for the specific purposes. The calculated clearance levels will serve as indicative values, and the methodology will support futher studies to aid in applications of specific clearance.
