History

Kemakta was founded in 1975 at a time when the issue of managing the nuclear power industry’s radioactive waste was becoming increasingly significant. In its early years, Kemakta’s assignments focused on radiation risks in the handling of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste. When the power industry, in response to the Conditions Act (Villkorslagen), initiated the Nuclear Fuel Safety Project (KBS), Kemakta was involved from the start, working on safety analyses for the final disposal, storage, and transport of radioactive waste.

During the second half of the 1980s, the company’s activities expanded to investigate the environmental impacts of mining waste, fiber banks, and various waste deposits. These assignments formed the foundation for Kemakta’s Environmental business area. This area gained further momentum in the 1990s when Kemakta was commissioned to develop risk-based guideline values for contaminated areas and assessment criteria for the classification of contaminated materials. In the 2000s, Kemakta further developed the Environmental business area through successful procurements and framework agreements.

Throughout Kemakta’s operational history, assignments related to radiation risks and radioactive waste have continued and evolved, with specialist services in advanced modeling and projects related to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, the Environmental Business area developed with a large number of projects involving the remediation of contaminated areas. Today, the two business areas, Nuclear Power and Environment, contribute approximately equally to the company’s revenue.
